The Lead

Patterson wakes to a Frost Advisory, and the frost rounds repeat every night through Monday sunny near 57 to 60 this afternoon (2 min)

Saturday opens with the National Weather Service's Frost Advisory for Putnam County running to 9 a.m., and Patterson's hourly picture carries frost before 10 this morning before the sun takes over. The afternoon is the easy part: partly sunny near 57 in Dover and 60 in Pawling and Patterson on a light northwest wind, close to yesterday's numbers and dry everywhere.

The pattern then repeats on a three-night loop. Tonight clears out again with lows near 30 to 32 and areas of frost after 10 p.m. in Patterson, Sunday repeats it with frost before 10 a.m. and a sunny 62 to 64 behind it, and Sunday night adds patchy frost after 2 a.m. before Monday morning's round, which the forecast names again before 9 a.m. The reward sits at the end: Monday reaches 64 to 66, and while Tuesday's high cools to the low-to-mid 50s with a low near 29 to 32 Tuesday night, none of the remaining nights carry a frost call after Monday.

That is four named frost mornings in a row for the Valley, all of them in Patterson's forecast. Tender plants that spent the week outdoors are done for the season; leave them out once more and Saturday morning's advisory is the reason why. Windshields need the scraper through Monday's round, and the cold night that follows the warm Monday is the next watch item.

Search Answers

The questions the Valley searches this week, answer first, source after.

How long does the frost run last?

Through Monday morning. Patterson's forecast names frost before 10 a.m. today, after 10 tonight, before 10 Sunday, and before 9 Monday, with Sunday night's round the softest at patchy after 2 a.m. After Monday's, no forecast period through Friday carries a frost call, even with Tuesday night's low near 29 to 32. The four-day run is the longest of the season so far, and it earns a Frost Advisory only this morning, when the coverage is broad enough for the Weather Service to name it county-wide.

When do Pawling's tax and water bills come due?

Monday, Nov. 2 is a double deadline, and both ends of town share it. In the village, the fiscal-year tax window at Village Hall, 9 Memorial Ave, closed its penalty-free stage on July 1, so November payments carry five percent interest for the first month late under the treasurer's posted notice. For town water and sewer customers the rule is starker: no payments are accepted after 12:00 noon on Nov. 2, whatever the postmark says, and any outstanding balance attaches as a lien to the town tax bill. If the bill is still sitting on the counter, Monday morning is the window, and the town clerk's office takes payments 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays at 160 Charles Colman Blvd.

What is happening Halloween week at the libraries?

Today, Saturday: Craft Corner runs at Patterson, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., drop in any time, all ages, no registration. The week builds from there: Witch Noses at the Pawling Annex Thursday, 4 to 5 p.m., ages 7 and up, where the noses are made for Halloween itself; Spooky Science at Patterson Thursday, 4:30 to 5:15 p.m., ages 5 to 8, registration required. Saturday the 31st, Trick or Treat Pawling carries the Haunted Library at the Pawling Free Library, 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., with gently spooky games, crafts and candy stations, while the Lanterns at the Library pumpkin display and vote runs the same morning, 10 to 4, with Pawling's Perfect Pumpkin announced Monday, Nov. 2.

What jobs are open in the Valley towns?

Two, both posted by the towns themselves. Dover's Highway Department is hiring a full-time Heavy Machinery/Equipment Operator; applications go through the Town Clerk's office at 845-832-6111 and are accepted until the position is filled. Patterson's Justice Court is still taking resumes for a full-time clerk to Judge Michael V. Caruso, 35 hours a week plus court nights, paying $47,000 to $53,000 plus a stipend for court sessions, resumes to mvcaruso@nycourts.gov.

What is still open around town this week?

Three items. Patterson's sealed bids for snow and ice removal at town facilities and sidewalks are due at the Town Clerk's office by 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 2, opened and read aloud on the spot. The AARP-sponsored survey for Patterson's senior residents, about 20 minutes, is on the town's announcements page. And the Chestnut Ridge Road closure in Dover holds for the county's culvert repair, with the town's notice still steering drivers to the posted detour.

Roads & Rails

Dry roads all week, with four frost mornings and one cold Tuesday night the Chestnut Ridge closure holds (1 min)

The seven-day runs dry everywhere: partly sunny today near 57 to 60, then clear nights with lows near 30 to 32 through the weekend, sunny Sunday at 62 to 64, and the week's warmest day Monday at 64 to 66 with morning fog patches before 9. Tuesday is the step-down, sunny but only near 53 to 56 after a low near 29 to 32 Tuesday night, and the second half of the week rebounds to 56 to 67. No rain appears in any period, and after Monday morning's round no period names frost either.

The standing item holds: the Chestnut Ridge Road closure in Dover continues for the county's culvert repair, per the town's notice. The boards: Pawling's Zoning Board of Appeals Monday at 7 p.m., Pawling Town Court Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., Dover's Town Board Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Town Hall, 126 E Duncan Hill Rd, and Patterson's board returns Wednesday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. For the train, the Harlem Valley line runs its normal weekend schedule with no work listed on the Metro-North notices this week.

AI Corner: one plain-English AI thing, every issue

This week: why frost forms on a clear, calm night, and what a chatbot gets wrong about it.

Ask a chatbot why frost showed up and you will often get a flat answer: "it was cold last night." The mechanism is worth knowing, because this week's forecast is built on it. On a clear, calm night the ground radiates its day's heat straight out to space, and surfaces like windshields, roofs and garden beds cool several degrees below the air a few feet up. That is how a night with a low of 30 can frost a windshield while a cloudy, breezy night at the same low often does not. It is also why the advisory language matters: Patterson's forecast carries frost in it for four straight mornings while Dover and Pawling's carry none, because cold air settles in the low spots and the valleys first. A generic "cold night, maybe frost" answer flattens exactly the detail that decides whether the morning starts with a scraper.
