The Lead

The frost clock starts tonight in Patterson, and Friday night is the coldest of the stretch sunny near 59 to 61 today (2 min)

Thursday is the last mild afternoon of the stretch: sunny with highs near 61 in Pawling and Patterson and 59 in Dover, on a north wind gusting to 23 mph. Tonight stays clear with lows near 33 to 35, and the frost story starts in Patterson, where the forecast names areas of frost after 5 a.m. Friday, gone before 9 once the sun is up.

Friday night is the one to plan around: mostly clear with lows near 29 in Dover and 31 in Pawling and Patterson, and Patterson's forecast calls for widespread frost after midnight. Saturday dawns with more of it, frost before 10 a.m. in Patterson while Dover and Pawling climb from lows near 30 to 32, and Sunday morning adds one more named frost before a sunny high near 61 to 63. All three days run dry.

Tender plants and the last pots on the porch: tonight is a cover-them night in Patterson, and Friday night is the night to cover or carry them in across all three towns. Exposed hoses and hose bibs get their first hard test of the season Friday night, so the one by the garage is worth two minutes before bed.

Search answers

The questions the Valley searches this week, answer first, source after.

When does frost hit Patterson this week?

Three nights carry the frost label in Patterson's point forecast: areas of frost after 5 a.m. tonight into Friday, gone by 9; widespread frost after midnight Friday night into Saturday, with more frost before 10 a.m.; and frost after 1 a.m. Saturday night with one more round before 9 a.m. Sunday morning. The Dover and Pawling forecasts skip the frost wording for now, though their Friday night lows land at 29 to 31, the same result on a lawn or a windshield without the label. If you garden on the Patterson side of the line, the town forecast is the one to read; the frost wording shows up there first.

What is new out of Patterson this week?

Wednesday night's Town Board agenda stacked the three public hearings, the 2027 budget, Local Law I-2 on the tax levy limit and Local Law I-3 on short-term rentals, ahead of the scheduled budget adoption, and the board's calendar lists the next regular meeting for Wednesday, Nov. 4. Two notices sit on the town's announcements page. Sealed bids for snow and ice removal at town facilities and sidewalks are due at the Town Clerk's office by 10 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 2, when they get opened and read aloud. And the Justice Court is accepting resumes for a full-time clerk to Judge Michael V. Caruso, 35 hours a week plus court nights, paying $47,000 to $53,000 plus a stipend for court sessions, with resumes going to mvcaruso@nycourts.gov.

Which nearby town landed state water money?

Carmel, with $5,000,000 set aside for Water District No. 2 treatment plant upgrades. The award is part of a state package covering 17 Hudson Valley municipalities that Mid Hudson News reported Wednesday; the three $10 million awards in the release went to the Town of Poughkeepsie, Red Hook and Mount Vernon, and North Salem picked up two grants, $6,313,720 for its Croton Falls Sewer District and $529,529 for PFAS removal and a well reactivation.

Why are there so many deer on the roads this month?

October through December is the peak: the state DOT puts deer-car crashes at as many as 70,000 a year statewide, with nearly half of them in these three months, and five people killed every season. The billboards on the highways this month put it their own way: deer don't check traffic. AAA's advice is the working version, stay alert, skip the distractions, and expect movement at dawn and dusk. Jim Byron, the owner of Patterson Auto Body, told Mid Hudson News his shop's fall repair count climbs every year, and this week gives the reason in one line: the rut and the early dark land together.

Roads & Rails

Dry roads through the weekend, with frost on the morning drives deer season adds the dusk watch (1 min)

Roads stay dry through Sunday: sunny today near 59 to 61 with north gusts to 23 mph, sunny Friday near 54 to 56, then the cold Friday night with lows near 29 to 31, and sunny Saturday near 57 to 59 after the morning frost. Shaded curves and bridge decks are the slick spots on Saturday's first drive.

The deer story above belongs in the driving plan too, so dusk on Routes 22 and 311 gets the full headlights-on treatment through the rut. The boards: Pawling's Zoning Board of Appeals Monday at 7, Town Court Tuesday at 5:30, Dover's Town Board next Wednesday at 6:30, and Patterson's board back on Nov. 4. The road work: the Chestnut Ridge Road closure in Dover holds for the county's culvert repair into the end of the year, per the town's standing notice.

AI Corner: one plain-English AI thing, every issue

This week: a frost answer is only as good as its point forecast.

Ask a chatbot when the first frost arrives and the answer can come back settled and miss the town: climate tables give an average date, the nearest big station gives its own date, and neither one is this week. The frost language in the forecasts is the check. Patterson's point forecast names frost on three straight nights starting after 5 a.m. Friday, while the Dover and Pawling forecasts hand over the same cold as plain lows near 29 to 31 without the frost label. An average-date answer would have split the difference and gotten both sides of the line wrong in different directions. When the question is about a specific night in a specific town, find the forecast with the town's name on it and read what it says.

Reply with questions; they become future AI Corner topics.
