Patterson's Town Board adopts the 2027 budget tonight, and the week's freezing night waits for Friday sunny and dry near 59 to 63 today (2 min)

Wednesday is the quiet before the cold turn: sunny with highs near 59 in Patterson, 61 in Dover and 63 in Pawling, on a north wind that stays under 13 mph. Tonight runs mostly cloudy with lows near 38 to 41, and Thursday stays sunny near 59 to 61 with gusts to 26 mph. The week's freezing night lands Friday, mostly clear with lows near 29 to 32 across the three towns, and the weekend that follows is dry and sunny near 56 to 63.

The civic anchor is tonight: Patterson's Town Board meets at 7 p.m. at Town Hall, 1142 Route 311, on an agenda that stacks three public hearings before the votes, the 2027 budget, a local law overriding the state tax levy limit, and a short-term-rentals law, with the Christmas parade, highway alarm bids and a Fields Corners Road chapter also on the list. The meeting streams live on YouTube and Zoom, per the town's posted agenda.

The questions the Valley searches this week, answer first, source after.

What is on Patterson's agenda tonight?

The board's posted agenda for Wednesday, Oct. 21 opens with the salute and roll call, then three public hearings in a row: the 2027 budget, Local Law I-2 overriding the state tax levy limit, and Local Law I-3 on short-term rentals. After the audit of bills and budget and fund transfers, the board hears public-comment items from Gwen Dougherty on recreation requests, Peter Muentener on the Christmas Parade and Veterans Park out-of-district users, Shawn Rogan on Putnam Lake Park District requests and the levy law, and Richard Williams on the rentals law, a Chapter 150 local law for Fields Corners Road, and Putnam County supplemental funding before an executive session. Stacy Dumont carries a building department refund request and the highway department's bid for alarms. The board's schedule after tonight shows the next regular meeting Nov. 4.

Did the state put money behind a Harlem Valley farm this week?

Yes, one over the line in Amenia. Gov. Hochul announced $48.5 million statewide on Monday for 43 farms covering more than 16,000 acres under round 20 of the Farmland Protection Implementation Grants program, and Mid Hudson News reports the regional awards include the Dutchess Land Conservancy's Conway Farm, a cash-crop hay operation owned by Kieran and Gabrielle Conway, set to receive $428,350 for a conservation easement on 123 acres with 39 percent productive soils. The program pays for agricultural conservation easements meant to keep land in farming, and this round raised the maximum award to $3 million per farm with a 10 percent incentive payment available for projects meeting climate or water goals.

Where can I still get a flu shot?

Putnam County's own clinic page still lists its fall schedule at three dates, Sept. 28 and Oct. 19 at Carmel Fire Department and Oct. 7 at Garrison Fire Department, and all three have passed, so the closest remaining options sit at the Pawling Free Library, where CVS runs vaccine clinics Tuesday, Oct. 27 and Thursday, Oct. 29, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day. The county page remains the reference for clinic basics: walk-ins welcome, the vaccine is for adults 18 and older, the fee is $30 cash or credit, and anyone 65 or older, or with a Medicare card, gets it free. Scheduling questions go to the health department at 845-808-1332.

Is the Chestnut Ridge Road closure still in place?

Yes. Dutchess County still holds the closed portion of Chestnut Ridge Rd. in Dover for the repair of two culverts, the town's notice remains standing on its alerts page with the closure expected to remain in place until the end of the year, and the county's two detour maps stay linked from the posting. Dover's site also still carries two open town notices: the Planning Board vacancy, open to town residents with training available and no experience required, and the Highway Department's opening for a full-time Heavy Machinery/Equipment Operator, with applications accepted at the Town Clerk's office at 845-832-6111 until the position is filled.

Roads & Rails

Two more dry days, then the freeze Friday night bow season runs through Nov. 20 (1 min)

Roads: dry through Friday, sunny today near 59 to 63 with the north wind easing, and Thursday the windiest remaining day with gusts to 26 mph. Friday cools near 52 to 54 before the mostly clear night drops lows to 29 to 32, so Saturday dawn puts shaded curves and bridge decks on the watch for the first slick surfaces of the stretch.

The woods: bow season for deer and bear runs in the Southern Zone through Friday, Nov. 20 per the state DEC's season announcement, so orange stays worth wearing on the trails from this week on. The boards: tonight's Patterson budget session at 7, and Dover's Town Board Wednesday week at 6:30.

AI Corner: one plain-English AI thing, every issue

This week: a chatbot can get the story right and the town wrong.

Ask a model about a regional news story and the summary can come back smooth and confident, with the county or the nearest big town swapped in for the small one. A farm-grant story in Amenia becomes a story about your town, or a court case from Poughkeepsie gets retold as if it happened down the street. The words are all real; the geography is the guess. The habit worth keeping: before you repeat a local-sounding claim, find the named place in the source itself and check it sits inside the town line you care about. This week's farm award is the worked example: the state list names the town, Amenia, one town north of Dover, and the grant number, $428,350, belongs to that address.

Reply with questions; they become future AI Corner topics.
