The Lead

Sunny and mild today near 62 to 66, then the week's cold turn arrives Friday night Patterson adopts its 2027 budget Wednesday (2 min)

The National Weather Service has a bright, dry Tuesday across all three towns: sunny with highs near 65 to 68 that settle to around 59 to 61 in the afternoon, and a north wind gusting to 21 to 22 mph in Pawling and Dover. Tonight clears out with lows near 38 to 41.

The stretch through Saturday stays dry. Wednesday runs sunny near 60 to 62, Thursday sunny near 61 to 63, and Friday cooler near 53 to 55. The cold turn comes Friday night: mostly clear with lows near 32 to 34 across Pawling, Dover and Patterson, the second freeze in six days, which puts Saturday dawn on the shaded-curve and bridge-deck watch. The civic anchor sits midweek: Patterson's Town Board holds its Budget Adoption line Wednesday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. at Town Hall, per the town's own meeting schedule, streamed on YouTube and Zoom.

Which boards meet this week?

Tuesday, Oct. 20 at 7 p.m., Patterson's Zoning Board of Appeals holds public hearings at Town Hall, 1142 Route 311, on a one-case agenda: the McMillen interpretation the board has held over since its Sept. 16 meeting, case #13-26, a request to interpret the June 25 code-enforcement determination under sections 154-27 and 154-44 of the town code, the question of whether variances are required for existing and proposed structures in a front yard at 78-80 Big Elm Road. Wednesday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m., Patterson's Town Board adopts the 2027 budget at the same table, streamed on YouTube and Zoom, the Adoption line on the town's meeting schedule after the Oct. 7 budget hearing. After that the board's schedule stays clear until a regular meeting on Nov. 4. Pawling's Zoning Board of Appeals meets Monday, Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. at the Town Clerk's office, Pawling Town Court sits Tuesday, Oct. 27 at 5:30 p.m., and Dover's Town Board holds its regular meeting Wednesday, Oct. 28 at 6:30 p.m. at Dover Town Hall.

Did a moose show up in Brewster?

Yes. Mid Hudson News reports a large bull moose was seen near Starr Ridge Road in Brewster on Sunday, about half a mile from the North Salem town line. The Department of Environmental Conservation says New York's largest land mammal can weigh up to 1,200 pounds, lives mostly in the Adirondacks, and that moose have also turned up occasionally in Columbia and northern Dutchess counties, with earlier Putnam and Westchester sightings logged in 2008, 2016, 2018 and 2022. The season matters here: breeding runs in late September and October, when moose move more in their search for mates. If you meet one, the advice is to enjoy the view from a distance, give it plenty of space and stay alert while driving.

Where can I still get a flu shot?

Putnam County's last fall clinic on its own schedule page is behind us: Monday, Oct. 19 at Carmel Fire Department was the final date listed. The page is still the reference for the county's clinic basics, walk-ins welcome, $30 cash or credit, free with a Medicare card for anyone 65 or older, and scheduling questions go to the health department at 845-808-1332. Across the line in Dutchess, the Pawling Free Library hosts CVS vaccine clinics Tuesday, Oct. 27 and Thursday, Oct. 29, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day, which is the closest remaining option for readers in Pawling and Patterson.

What are the libraries running this week?

Halloween week is the main event at both libraries. Patterson's Halloween Friday Fun Night lands Friday, Oct. 23, 5 to 6:15 p.m., with the costume parade, prizes for best costume and best group costume, and the vote on pumpkins families picked up and decorated from the library's Oct. 12 giveaway table. This week at Patterson also holds Flying Needles Tuesday at 10:30, ABC Club at 2, Teen Takeover: Social Media Safety at 4, French Class at 4:30, the Board of Trustees Tuesday at 6:30, Baby Jamboree Wednesday at 10:30, Preparing for College drop-in help Wednesday 4 to 6, and the Traveler's Book Club on "Driving Over Lemons" Wednesday at 6 with special guest Gerry Dawes. Thursday brings the final Brushes, Books, and More session at 4:30 and Holiday Cooking at the Blue Olive at 6, an offsite night at the Pawling gourmet store with owners John and Beth Canevari. Over at Pawling, a heads-up on tonight's Visiting Ireland travel talk with Sheridan Hraska: the library's calendar now marks it CANCELLED, with a note that the program will be rescheduled. The American Conversation Project meets Wednesday at 2, the Frankenstein book club runs online Wednesday at 6:30, teen Dungeons & Dragons with Dungeon Master Nikolai runs Thursday 4:30 to 6:30, "Tarantula" screens Friday at 6:30 at the Annex, and the Haunted Library lands Saturday, Oct. 31, 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. during Trick or Treat Pawling.

Is the Chestnut Ridge Road closure still in place?

Yes. Dutchess County still holds the closed portion of Chestnut Ridge Rd. in Dover for the repair of two culverts, the town's notice remains standing on its alerts page with the closure expected to remain in place until the end of the year, and the county's two detour maps stay linked from the posting. One more notice worth reading while you are on that page: Dover is still seeking residents to fill a vacancy on its Planning Board, the board that reviews development proposals, subdivisions, site plans and special permits. Applicants must be town residents, prior experience is not required, and training is available; the board meets the first and third Monday of each month at 7 p.m.

Roads & Rails

A dry week on the pavement, and the first slick dawn arrives Saturday bow season runs through Nov. 20 (1 min)

Roads: dry in both directions of the week, sunny Tuesday through Friday with the gusty north wind easing after today, and the next slick surfaces coming Saturday dawn after Friday night's lows near 32 to 34. Shaded curves and bridge decks get the slow pass on the first drive. Rails: check the MTA Harlem Valley schedule before Thursday's commute, the windiest remaining day with gusts to 22 to 23 mph.

The woods: bow season for deer and bear runs in the Southern Zone through Friday, Nov. 20 per the state DEC's season announcement, so orange stays worth wearing on the trails from this week on. The boards: Patterson's ZBA hearings tonight at 7, the budget adoption Wednesday at 7, and Dover's Town Board Wednesday week at 6:30.

AI Corner: one plain-English AI thing, every issue

This week: a flyer with no date can be a real event, or an old one that never got taken down.

Ask a chatbot about a library event and it will happily answer from a page that was never dated, and an undated page cannot tell the model whether the event already happened. Event calendars are the clean case: the listings carry their own dates, so a summary that says an event "runs Friday" can be checked in one glance against the calendar it came from. The habit worth keeping: when an answer matters enough to leave the house for, scroll past the summary, open the calendar or flyer itself, and match the weekday and the date against the day you plan to go. Friday's Fun Night runs Oct. 23, a Friday this year, and a page pairing it with a different weekday is telling you about a different year.

Reply with questions; they become future AI Corner topics.
