The weekend splits in two. Today holds partly sunny near 65 in Pawling and Patterson, 62 in Dover, before rain arrives after 2 p.m. Sunday. The National Weather Service has the rain running heavy overnight: a half to three-quarters of an inch is expected in all three towns, and Patterson's Sunday night forecast carries a chance of thunderstorms before 2 a.m. Monday. If outdoor plans matter this weekend, Sunday morning is the dry window.
Columbus Day itself is the reward. Showers end before 8 a.m. Monday, then the sky clears to partly sunny near 69 in Pawling, 67 in Dover and 70 in Patterson. The quiet does not last long: showers return Tuesday afternoon and evening, about a 50 to 60 percent chance in each town, before Wednesday turns mostly sunny near 60 to 63 and Thursday climbs toward 70. The state's latest foliage report, for the week of Oct. 7 through 13, has Dutchess County towns at 30 percent change, Fishkill among them with average-to-bright yellows and reds, and Cold Spring at 20 percent, its brightest color along Routes 301 and 403 and the Taconic State Parkway. Two soaks and a warm week ahead should move the Valley's own color right along; the reports update each Wednesday afternoon.
The questions the Valley searches this week, answer first, source after.
When do Pawling's boards meet this week?
Town Court opens the week Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at Town Hall, 160 Charles Colman Blvd. Wednesday at 6 p.m. brings the week's main event, the Town Board's public hearing on a local law to override the state's real property tax levy limit for fiscal 2027, at Town Hall and streamed on the town YouTube. The Conservation Advisory & Energy Board follows Thursday at 6 p.m., and next Monday, Oct. 19, is a two-board night: the Town Planning Board at 7 p.m. at Town Hall and the Village Board at 7 p.m. at Village Hall, 9 Memorial Ave. The village calendar lists no village meeting before Oct. 19. Materials for the levy hearing are available at pawling.org or the Town Clerk's office.
What happened with Patterson's budget, and what comes next?
The hearing stage is done. The Town Board's Oct. 7 agenda carried the public hearing on the 2027 budget plus a second hearing on the special districts roll, and the town has posted that agenda on its Town Board page. Adoption is set for Wednesday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. at Town Hall, 1142 Route 311, per the board's published meeting schedule. The board meets on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month, meetings stream on YouTube and Zoom, and after adoption the next regular meeting lands Nov. 4.
Today is the mini-golf day: Saturday Stories and Songs runs 10:30 to 11:15, the library closes at noon, and FORE! The Books takes over the stacks 1 to 5 p.m., with proceeds supporting children's programs. Monday, the Toy Photography Workshop with Zach Oat starts its three-Monday run at 5 p.m. in the Annex, and the Pawling Rotary Club meets at 5:30. Tuesday stacks Baby Bounce at 10, Toddlers and Twos at 11, Mahjong at 3, Girls Who Code at 4, the Writers Group at 6:15 and a Leaf Elves drawing workshop at 6:30. Wednesday carries the Let's Explore Animals series at 4, Threads Lab knitting at 6, and Evening Book Conversations at 6:30, this month on "The Only Woman in the Room" by Marie Benedict. Thursday ends with Chess for All at 6 and Sip and Sculpt Pumpkin Carving for adults at 6:30, and Friday brings Monster Movie Madness, the 1950s stop-motion classic "Tarantula," at 6:30 in the Annex.
One date remains on the county page: Monday, Oct. 19, 2 to 6 p.m. at Carmel Fire Department. The clinics are for residents 18 and older, the fee is $30 cash or credit, and anyone 65 or older, or anyone with a Medicare card, gets the shot free with the card. In-car vaccination is offered if you flag the need when you register at putnamcountyny.gov/fluclinic or call 845-808-1332. The Oct. 7 Garrison clinic has passed.
Roads: today stays dry, but Sunday's rain totals a half-inch or more and Monday can still be slick before 8 a.m. The next wet call is Tuesday, showers after 2 p.m. and again before 2 a.m. Wednesday, so expect leaf-slick patches on Route 22 and the back roads Tuesday evening. Wednesday through Friday run dry and bright, high 60s to near 70 Thursday, the best driving window of the week.
Rails and meetings: the Harlem Valley line keeps its regular weekday pattern this week. The boards: Pawling Town Court Tuesday 5:30, the Pawling levy hearing Wednesday 6 p.m., Dover's special Town Board Wednesday 6:30 p.m., the Pawling Conservation Advisory & Energy Board Thursday 6 p.m., and Dover's Zoning Board of Appeals stays cancelled for Monday, Oct. 12. Next week: the Pawling and Village Planning nights Monday Oct. 19, Patterson's budget adoption Wednesday Oct. 21, and Dover's regular Town Board Wednesday Oct. 28 at 6:30 p.m.
AI Corner: one plain-English AI thing, every issue
This week: let AI walk you through a budget before adoption night.
Patterson adopts its 2027 budget Oct. 21, and Pawling's board hears a tax-levy-override law Wednesday. Both processes run on documents: agendas, budget drafts, legal notices. Paste a budget summary or the proposed law text into your AI and ask it three things: what changed from last year, what a levy override allows the town to do, and which line items moved the most. Then take the two or three items that matter to your tax bill and read them in the source document yourself. An AI summary is a map; the agenda and the law text are the territory, and public comment lands better when you can point to the page.
Reply with questions; they become future AI Corner topics.
