The Lead

Showers end tonight, then Monday takes over as the sunny day what the week looks like after the wet Sunday, and where the color stands (2 min)

The rain gets its day today. The National Weather Service gives the Valley a 30 percent shower chance in Pawling and Dover after mid-afternoon and 40 percent in Patterson starting around 2 p.m., under a high near 63 in Pawling and Patterson and 62 in Dover. Everything clears tonight: showers end by 7 or 8 p.m. across the towns, and the clouds keep going until the sky is mostly clear near daybreak.

Monday is the day to plan around. The holiday starts with patchy fog in Dover before 10 a.m., then turns mostly sunny near 64 there and near 66 in Pawling and Patterson, with northwest gusts to about 28 mph. After that the week runs dry and bright, sunny Tuesday near 60 to 62, sunny Wednesday near 65 or 66, and Thursday tops the stretch near 68 to 70 before Friday settles back to the upper 60s. Thursday is the pickup for outdoor plans if Monday fills up.

The color is still early. The state's latest foliage report, dated Sept. 30 through Oct. 6, puts Dutchess County towns at 10 to 15 percent change, and Cold Spring in Putnam under 5. The report's season map keeps the highest change in the Adirondacks and Catskills, which is the normal order, and it points to late October for peak color in the Valley. A washout today would have set the weekend back; this forecast does not.

Search answers

The questions the Valley searches this week, answer first, source after.

What is Patterson deciding this Wednesday, all of it?

Three things land on Wednesday, Oct. 7, and all three happen at Town Hall, 1142 Route 311. Sealed bids for up to four electronic outdoor LED signs open at 10 a.m. in the Town Clerk's office. At 7 p.m. the Town Board holds the public hearing on the 2027 budget, and the same night it holds a second public hearing on the Special Districts Assessment Roll and the districts' estimate of expenses and revenues, which the roll notice says is out for review at the Assessor's office. Budget adoption stays set for Wednesday, Oct. 21. Meetings stream on YouTube and Zoom if you want to watch how the room goes before you speak.

What is the library running this week while school is out?

The holiday week fills up fast. Monday brings Minecraft Explorer at 4 and Threads Lab: Intro to Knitting at 6. Tuesday carries the quiet grown-up options, Mahjong at 3 and the Pawling Writers Group at 6:15. Wednesday the library runs VolunTeens at 5, and Thursday, the school day off, is the big one: Knitting & Crocheting with Friends at 2, Dungeons & Dragons at 4:30, Chess for All at 6, and the Library Board of Trustees meeting at 6:45, open to the public. Friday the Mid-Hudson Discovery Museum returns with Chain Reaction Machines at 4:30 and 5:30, next to the teen movie Sheep Detectives at 4:30.

Where can I still get a flu shot this month?

Two Putnam County clinics remain: Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2 to 6 p.m. at Garrison Fire Department, and Monday, Oct. 19, 2 to 6 p.m. at Carmel Fire Department. The county page now lists the October dates directly. They are for residents 18 and older, the fee is $30 cash or credit, and anyone 65 or older, or anyone with a Medicare card, gets the shot free with the card. Walk-ins are welcome, and both locations offer in-car vaccination if you flag that need when you register at putnamcountyny.gov/fluclinic or call 845-808-1332.

Roads & Rails

A wet finish to the weekend, then a dry week for drivers and rail riders the Valley travel picture through the holiday (1 min)

Roads: today is the wet drive of the week, a 30 to 40 percent shower chance between 2 and 4 p.m. depending on the town, then clearing tonight. Monday morning starts with patchy fog in Dover before 10 a.m., so take Route 22 slowly through the valley early, and gusts run to about 28 mph in the afternoon. From Tuesday on, every day is sunny through Friday.

Rails and meetings: Metro-North's Harlem Valley line runs a holiday schedule Monday, so check the train time before you go, since holiday Saturdays often run a Sunday pattern. Dover's calendar stays as it stood: the Zoning Board of Appeals night on Monday, Oct. 12 is marked cancelled, Planning meets Oct. 19 and the Town Board on Oct. 28, both at Town Hall, 126 E Duncan Hill Rd. Patterson's board carries Wednesday's 10 a.m. LED bid opening and the two 7 p.m. hearings, then budget adoption on Oct. 21.

AI Corner: one plain-English AI thing, every issue

This week: turn Wednesday's Patterson hearings into a one-page cheat sheet.

Wednesday carries the 2027 budget hearing and the special districts roll hearing at 7 p.m., and both documents are on the town's site. Paste the tentative budget and the roll notice into your AI and ask for a one-page cheat sheet: what the budget adds and cuts, which special districts appear on the roll and what each one costs a typical property, and one question worth asking out loud about each. Print it or save it to your phone, bring it to Town Hall, and check every number it gives you against the town's own PDF before you stand up, because an AI can pull a figure wrong and the room will know.

Reply with questions; they become future AI Corner topics.
