Today is the warmest day of the stretch. The National Weather Service puts Patterson partly sunny with a high near 84, Pawling near 82, and Dover near 80, with west wind gusting to 20 mph at times. The catch is timing. Shower chances arrive this afternoon, mainly after 4 p.m. in Pawling, after 3 p.m. in Dover, and between 2 and 5 p.m. in Patterson, where a stray thunderstorm can follow after 5. Chances run 30 to 40 percent, which usually means a passing shower, and Patterson carries a thunderstorm tag after 5 p.m.
The weekend makes up for it. Saturday runs sunny near 69 in Pawling and Patterson and near 66 in Dover. Sunday holds mostly sunny in the mid-60s with only a slight shower chance after 2 p.m., and Monday turns sunny near 67 before a midweek cool-down into the low 60s.
If you have outdoor plans, put them before the afternoon. Morning errands and trail time beat anything after 2 p.m. today, and whatever you skip moves to Saturday without a weather penalty. Check the radar once before you head out.
The questions the Valley searches this week, answer first, source after.
When is Patterson's budget hearing, and what happens this month?
Three dates, all at Town Hall, 1142 Route 311. Sealed bids for up to four electronic LED signs open Wednesday, Oct. 7 at 10 a.m. at the Town Clerk's office, and the 2027 budget public hearing runs that evening on the Town Board calendar. Adoption is set for Wednesday, Oct. 21. The tentative budget posted on the town's Town Board page proposes a 4.09 percent spending increase over 2026, about $134,700 past the state tax cap, and Supervisor Richard Williams pointed to a modest increase for the two fire departments, electric and gas costs up 7 percent, and the first bond payments on the EMS building. Residents can speak at the hearing before the board votes.
Two public clinics from the Putnam County Department of Health remain: Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2 to 6 p.m. at Garrison Fire Department, and Monday, Oct. 19, 2 to 6 p.m. at Carmel Fire Department. They are for residents 18 and older, the fee is $30 cash or credit, and anyone 65 or older with a Medicare card gets the shot free. Register at putnamcountyny.gov/fluclinic or call 845-808-1332. Walk-ins are taken, and both remaining clinics offer in-car vaccination if you flag it when you register. School-age kids are covered separately through free school clinics; Matthew Paterson Elementary's date is Tuesday, Oct. 13, with schedules handed out by each school.
What is happening at the Pawling library this weekend and next?
The weekend itself is quiet. The Storywalk at Lakeside Park runs daily through Oct. 19, and Monday adds Minecraft Explorer for grades 2 to 4 at 4 p.m. and a Threads Lab knitting intro for ages 10 through adult at 6 p.m. at the Library Annex. Next weekend is bigger. Friday, Oct. 9 brings a teen movie at 4:30 p.m. and the Mid-Hudson Discovery Museum's Chain Reaction Machines sessions at 4:30 and 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, the library closes early at noon for FORE! The Books, mini-golf among the shelves that raises money for children's programs.
After today, the road picture stays clean through the Columbus Day weekend: Saturday is sunny, Sunday carries only a slight shower chance after 2 p.m., and Monday runs sunny near 67 before the workweek cools down. If you are driving to a game, an orchard or the station, Saturday and Monday morning are the dry windows.
The meeting ledger is thin this week. Dover stays quiet until its Zoning Board of Appeals night on Monday, Oct. 12, which the town calendar marks as cancelled, then Planning on Oct. 19 and Town Board on Oct. 28, both at Town Hall, 126 E Duncan Hill Rd. Patterson's action all lands Wednesday, Oct. 7, with the LED sign bid opening at 10 a.m. and the budget hearing that evening. The Metro-North check found no Harlem Line notices posted as of this morning, so the regular schedule applies.
AI Corner: one plain-English AI thing, every issue
This week: three questions to bring to Patterson's budget hearing.
The tentative 2027 budget is posted on the town's Town Board page, and the public hearing is Wednesday, Oct. 7. Paste the PDF into your AI and ask it to list the five largest spending increases, flag anything tied to a contract or bond payment, and total the fire department lines. Write down what you get, then compare each number against the document before Wednesday, because AI can pull a figure wrong. At the hearing you get to speak before the board votes on Oct. 21, and one checked number beats a page of guesses.
Reply with questions; they become future AI Corners.
