The Lead

Showers end by noon today, then a dry run to a near-82 Friday where the rain lands this morning, and the week ahead (2 min)

A 20 percent shower chance covers the Valley until about noon today, then it dries out. The National Weather Service puts Pawling mostly cloudy with a high near 73 this afternoon, and Dover a degree cooler near 72. The wind turns southwest at 5 to 7 mph, nothing that moves the porch chairs.

The rest of the week runs dry until late Friday. Friday is the warm day at near 82 in Pawling and near 79 in Dover, with the only shower chance arriving after 4 p.m. and gusts to 20 mph. Saturday turns sunny near 69, Sunday stays mostly sunny near 66, and the next flagged rain waits until Sunday night at 30 percent.

The order of operations: let the morning showers pass, plan outdoor work and trail time for Thursday and Friday morning, and keep Saturday open for errands while the sun holds. The forecast has already shifted once this week, so check it again Friday before locking in the whole day.

Search answers

The questions the Valley searches this week, answer first, source after.

What is in Patterson's 2027 budget proposal?

A 4.09 percent spending increase over 2026, about $134,700 past the state tax cap. Supervisor Richard Williams presented the tentative budget at the Sept. 9 board meeting and said several revenue lines are trending down while costs keep rising. The town board refined it in work sessions through Sept. 28; the public hearing is Wednesday, Oct. 7, and adoption is set for Oct. 21, both at Town Hall, 1142 Route 311.

Roads & Rails

A quiet meeting stretch, and two Oct. 7 deadlines to watch the Valley calendar, plus a Metro-North check (1 min)

No rain shows up on the roads through Saturday daytime; the next flagged shower chance waits until Sunday night. The Metro-North check found no Harlem Line notices posted as of this morning, so the regular schedule applies.

Two Valley deadlines land Wednesday, Oct. 7: Patterson opens its sealed bids for up to four LED signs at 10 a.m. at Town Hall, and the town board holds its 2027 budget hearing that evening. Dover stays quiet until its Zoning Board of Appeals night on Oct. 12, which the town calendar marks as cancelled, then Planning on Oct. 19 and Town Board on Oct. 28, both 6:30 p.m. and later at Town Hall, 126 E Duncan Hill Rd.

AI Corner: one plain-English AI thing, every issue

This week: read Patterson's budget before the Oct. 7 hearing.

The tentative 2027 budget is posted on the town's Town Board page, and the public hearing is Wednesday, Oct. 7. Drop the PDF into your AI and try: "Summarize this town budget in plain sentences. List the five largest spending increases, anything over the state tax cap, and the date and time of the public hearing." Two minutes later you know whether the fire departments, the highway fund or something else is driving the 4.09 percent ask, and you can ask about it before the vote. Numbers pulled by an AI can come out wrong, so check anything you plan to repeat against the town's own document.

Reply with questions; they become future AI Corners.
